LETTER TO EDITOR
June 16, 2006
Last year the Jersey City Reservoir Preservation Alliance hosted thousands of people at Reservoir 3 in Jersey City Heights. Young and old from several states, and every part of Jersey City and Hudson County came to experience our “Hidden Jewel.”
Jersey City Council President Mariano Vega was instrumental in getting approval for fishing, kayaking, tours and other events, and has always been a great supporter of open space and the improvement of the quality of life in our city.
This year, Vega worked hard to broker a license agreement with the City and the Reservoir Alliance to allow the public to use this great resource. A fishing derby, free kayaking like Hoboken and NYC enjoy, a world-class environmental art invitational, history tours, wildlife study, and use as a resource by local science students were all planned. Vega worked out details with Department of Public Works head John Yurchak, Risk Management’s Peter Soriero, and Mayor Jerramiah Healy.
However, when the City Law Department submitted the license agreement to the City Council for approval, it contained some shocking provisions:
o The public can enjoy the Reservoir for only two days during the whole summer.
o The press cannot set foot in Reservoir, and no one – including the general public – can take pictures without five days prior written notification to the Mayor’s Office.
o Events can be canceled by the City with only one hour notice.
Council President Vega, calling the resolution “disingenuous,” withdrew it from consideration. Since then the Reservoir Alliance has been working hard to get the Reservoir gates unlocked for events this summer and fall and is setting up a Rally at City Hall on Wednesday, June 28 at 6 pm.
A reasonable license agreement needs to be approved for the Reservoir Alliance. The public will greatly thank Council President Mariano Vega and all the other members of the City Council for helping to “Unlock the gates!”, and let Jersey City taxpayers use and enjoy what they already own.
