: Epps, who receives a $225,038 annual salary plus a $1,000-a-month housing allowance as Jersey City's state-appointed superintendent and another $49,000 as an assemblyman, is behind on his city taxes. : Epps failed to pay $1,040.74 in property taxes, due May 1, on a three-family home on Bramhall Avenue. He was up to date on his taxes for his other Jersey City home on Holly Street, according to city records. : "I forgot, that's all. No big deal," Epps said last night. "I'll pay it tomorrow." : However, it was not the first time Epps forgot to pay his taxes, according to city records. : The school chief also was late on his taxes for the last two quarters of 2005 on the same property, but paid up in March, records show. : "I guess I need someone to take care of them for me," said Epps, who admitted that, as an elected official, he really ought to take better care of his civic responsibilities. : Epps is among hundreds of property owners the city says owes back taxes. If he doesn't pay up, the lien could be sold at a tax sale on June 22. : Already drawing fire from state Republicans for a lavish 2004 trip in which he arrived in England four days before the educational conference he said he was attending actually began, Epps's tax problem puts him in their cross hairs again. : "You would think that someone who earns a quarter of a million dollars courtesy of the taxpayer would be a little more diligent about being a taxpayer," said Tom Wilson, the state's Republican chairman. : Anthony Cucci, a former Jersey City mayor and current school board member, was asked to comment on the issue. He said he empathized with Epps - literally. : "It's hard for me to comment, because I was on the same list. I forgot with everything going on," said Cucci, who has already paid up on his back taxes. : During the June 22 tax auction, people will be able to buy the outstanding tax liens with an interest charge. The purchaser of the tax lien is then responsible for collecting the principal plus the interest, but has to wait two years before beginning foreclosure proceedings on the property.
