Epps: 'I forgot' to pay property taxes

Jersey City School Superintendent and Assemblyman Charles T. Epps Jr., already catching heat for a lavish 2004 trip to England, is making headlines again.

Epps hasn't paid $1,040.74 in property taxes, due May 1, on a three-family home he owns on Bramhall Avenue, and if not repaid, the debt could be sold June 22 in the city's tax lien sale.

"I forgot, that's all. No big deal," Epps told The Jersey Journal earlier today. "I'll pay it tomorrow."

This isn't the first time Epps forgot to pay his taxes, according to city records.

The school chief also was late on his taxes for the last two quarters of 2005 on the same property, but finally paid up in March, records show.

"I guess I need someone to take care of them for me," said Epps, who admitted that, as an elected official, he really ought to take better care of his civic responsibilities.

"You would think that someone who earns a quarter of a million dollars courtesy of the taxpayer would be a little more diligent about being a taxpayer,” said Tom Wilson, the state's Republican chairman.

Epps is among hundreds of property owners the city says owes back taxes. If he doesn't pay up, the lien could be sold at a tax sale on June 22.

Read all about it in tomorrow's Jersey Journal.
