A cold night, 1971. The Christmas show at Union Hill High School in Union City, had ended a half-hour earlier. I was outside the building with friends when a police car pulled up. A cop got out bellowing "Break it up, get outta here." Hoodlums hanging out, he must've thought.

We'd been through it before. Like George W. said, "When we were young and wild, we were young and wild."

But not all of us. One kid, a friend yet never part of the wild bunch, told the officer that he was president of the Union Hill student council. He took the cop aside for a chat. The policeman got back in his cruiser and drove off.
