La noticia es que el representante demócrata Bob Menéndez de New Jersey ocupará un curul en el Senado de Estados Unidos a partir del 17 de enero. La noticia detrás de la noticia es que Menéndez tal vez no lo ocupe después de las elecciones de noviembre. Y la explicación podría estar en ese viejo consejo francés: "Cherchez la femme."

La semana pasada, el senador por New Jersey --y ahora gobernador-electo-- Jon S. Corzine escogió a Menéndez, el capataz político del Condado Hudson, para que lo reemplace en el Senado por el resto de su mandato, que termina a mediados del año. Aparentemente, Corzine espera que Menéndez no sea retado por colegas demócratas en las elecciones primarias del 2006 y que derrote a su presunto contrincante republicano, Thomas H. Kean Jr., en las elecciones generales.

Sin embargo, hay una mosca en la sopa. Algunos de los colegas demócratas de Menéndez ya han expresado sus intenciones de salirle al paso en las primarias y corre el rumor de que cuestionarán las relaciones entre Menéndez y una joven ex asistente a quién él presuntamente convirtió en una bien remunerada cabildera y asesora política. Y si ellos no sacan a relucir el tema de la falta de decoro, es casi seguro que el Partido Republicano y el candidato republicano lo van a hacer.
