The news is that Rep. Bob Menéndez (D-N.J.) will sit in the U.S. Senate beginning Jan. 17. The news behind the news is that Menéndez might not sit there beyond the November election. And the explanation might be found in the old French advice: "Cherchez la femme."

Last week, New Jersey senator -- and now governor-elect -- Jon S. Corzine selected Menéndez, Hudson County's political boss, to replace him in the Senate for the remaining months of his term, ending in midyear. Corzine's hope apparently was that Menéndez would be unopposed by fellow Democrats in the 2006 primaries and would go on to defeat his likely Republican opponent, Thomas H. Kean Jr.,. in the general elections.

There is a fly in the ointment, however. Some of Menéndez's fellow Democrats are voicing their intention to challenge him in the primaries, and rumor has it that they will question Menéndez's relationship with a young former assistant he reportedly turned into highly paid lobbyist and political consultant. And if they don't raise the issue of impropriety, the Republican Party and its candidate are sure to.
