Quinnipiac: Menendez leads Kean in Senate race

Sen.-designate Robert Menendez has a six-point lead, 44%-38%, over State Sen. Tom Kean Jr. in the 2006 U.S. Senate race, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released this morning.

More than half of New Jersey voters (51%) approve of Gov.-elect Jon Corzine's appointment of Menendez, while 23% disapprove. Among Democrats, that number is 67%-11%.

Menendez has a 22%-10% approval rating, while Kean's is at 20%-3%.

"While voters support Governor-elect Corzine's choice of Congressman Robert Menendez to serve out his Senate term, they have mixed feelings about the Congressman seeking a full six- year term, probably because they don't know him that well," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Just over a third of Democrats are ready to nominate Menendez for a full six-year Senate term while the rest are undecided or would like to see someone else,"said Richards. "But in a possible preview of the race that counts most, Menendez, bolstered by an 11 point margin among women, leads the likely GOP Senate choice, State Sen. Tom Kean, Jr..

Acting Gov. Richard Codey has a 71%-10% approval rating, including a 67% approval rating among Republicans. Sen. Corzine has a 54%-28% approval rating.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 689 registered voters between December 10 - 13, with a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percentage points. The survey includes 261 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 6.1 percentage points.
