: TRENTON, Dec. 8 - As word spread on Thursday that Governor-elect Jon S. Corzine had selected Representative Robert Menendez as his replacement in the United States Senate, the focus of New Jersey's political establishment shifted to whether Mr. Menendez would face a challenge in the Democratic primary in June.

: In the last few weeks, several congressmen who had lobbied Mr. Corzine for his Senate seat said they would run in the primary whether or not they were selected to fill out the final year of his term. The two who were most emphatic were Mr. Menendez and Representative Robert E. Andrews of Camden County, who said in an interview last month, "If he appoints someone else, it is my intention to run, and I am preparing to run."
